چکیده

[1] A fresh, 1.85 km diameter impact crater in the midlatitudes of Mars (38°N) named Vaduz exhibits distinctive crater‐related geological subunits (facies) extending up to ∼15 radii from the rim crest and perched >10 m above the adjacent plains. Knobby terrain fringing and underlying the facies is interpreted as degraded thermal contraction crack polygons, consistent with an ice‐rich mantle buried by ejecta. The almost complete regional disappearance of this ice‐r ich uni t , and consequent lowering of regional topography by over ten meters, is interpreted to mean that the ice‐rich mantle was formed by climate‐related deposition of snow, ice, and dust during recent periods of high obliquity. Transition to lower obliquity, and the attendant poleward retreat of the mantling unit, is the most likely cause of the regional loss of the ice‐rich layer. The depth of this crater, relative to the thickness of the ice‐rich unit, indicates that the impact event excavated bedrock and that Vaduz can be classified as an excess ejecta crater. Excavated silicate regolith and fragmented target debris appear to have been an important factor in the armoring mechanism. Citation: Schaefer, E. I., J. W. Head, and S. J. Gasa impact crater, Mars: Very young gullies formed from impact into latitude-dependent mantle and debris-covered glacier deposits?

The mode of formation of gullies on Mars, very young erosional–depositional landforms consisting of an alcove, channel, and fan, is one of the most enigmatic problems in martian geomorphology. Major questions center on their ages, geographic and stratigraphic associations, relation to recent ice ages, and, if formed by flowing water, the sources of the water to cause the observed erosion/deposi...

Impacts into non-polar ice-rich paleodeposits on Mars: Excess ejecta craters, perched craters and pedestal craters as clues to Amazonian climate history

We compare three previously independently studied crater morphologies – excess ejecta craters, perched craters, and pedestal craters – each of which has been proposed to form from impacts into an ice-rich surface layer. Our analysis identifies the specific similarities and differences between the crater types; the commonalities provide significant evidence for a genetic relationship among the m...

The ages of pedestal craters on Mars: Evidence for a late-Amazonian extended period of episodic emplacement of decameters-thick mid-latitude ice deposits

There is significant geomorphologic evidence for the past presence of longitudinally widespread, latitudinally zoned deposits composed of ice-rich material at the northern and southern mid latitudes on Mars (lobate debris aprons, lineated valley fill, concentric crater fill, pedestal craters, etc.). Among these features, pedestal craters (Pd) are impact craters interpreted to have produced a pr...

Study of a 15 Km Crater with Diverse Morphology, Elysium Planitia, Mars

Introduction: The recent missions to Mars with diverse instruments have provided a new perspective for the study of Martian surface landforms. They have permitted the characterization of over 40,000 impact craters ≥ 5 km in diameter [1], showing a diverse cratering record with some quite unusual morphologies. Changes in crater morphology are thought to reflect the impact energy and target prope...

Sinton crater, Mars: Evidence for impact into a plateau icefield and melting to produce valley networks at the Hesperian–Amazonian boundary

a r t i c l e i n f o a b s t r a c t The majority of martian valley networks are found on Noachian-aged terrain and are attributed to be the result of a 'warm and wet' climate that prevailed early in Mars' history. Younger valleys have been identified, though these are largely interpreted to be the result of localized conditions associated with the melting of ice from endogenic heat sources. S...
